Manchester United allegedly plans a summer move for former Arsenal midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who shone for AC Milan this season.
According to a report from Algerian outlet Competition as relayed by The Sun, Manchester United has entered the race for the signing of AC Milan midfield star Ismael Bennacer.
Bennacer, 22, was in France through the youth ranks of the hometown club AC Arles, before transferring to Arsenal in 2015. He spent two years with the Gunners but was unable to achieve the first-team grade. And after only a solitary senior appearance and a loan stint at Tours FC, he joined Empoli in 2017.
Bennacer enjoyed an impressive Italian debut campaign, helping Empoli support Series A and continuing in the same vein in its first season in the Italian top-flight. Arsenal had the chance last summer to re-sign him, but they refused and the Algerian international ended up joining AC Milan in a £ 14 million transfer.
Since signing for the Rossoneri especially under Stefano Pioli, the 22-year-old has developed into a key member of the team. To date, Bennacer featured twenty-eight times in all competitions, assisting in a solitary goal.
Even in last year’s victory of Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations, Bennacer was the star player and called the tournament winner for his exploits. Growth in the 22-year-old has alerted several clubs across Europe since leaving Arsenal, with Manchester City and Real Madrid taking an interest in him.
And Manchester United has also entered the Algerian foreign search according to the latest news. The Red Devils have been in an invincible state in recent weeks, having not lost in 16 matches in all the contests. The midfield unit composed of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Fred, Scott McTominay, and Nemanja Matic was crucial in this run.
Matic particularly seemed to have found a second wind in his career, putting brilliant performances one after the other in the defensive midfield position. But the Serbian doesn’t have a lot of years left in him at the top level, at 31. So, Manchester United would bode well for him to have in place a long-term succession plan, with Bennacer being a viable choice.
But aside from Manchester City and Real Madrid, Manchester United will still have to deal with PSG, which has already had an offer rejected from Milan for £35 million. The report further argues that the Rossoneri could be forced to consider offloading their star midfielder by an offer of around £ 45 million.
If the Red Devils’ supposed involvement in the Algerian international becomes a formal strategy remains to be seen in the coming weeks.
