Manchester United have signed Scotland international Martha Thomas to replace Lauren James as the latter joined Chelsea. Thomas has signed a deal with the club until 2023. The club will have the option to sign her for another year. The striker played for West Ham the past two seasons after spells with Le Havre and Charlotte 49ers. She has eight caps for her country after making her debut last year.

“I’m excited to be joining Manchester United, I’ve been impressed with the success the club has had over the last few years and that was a real drive for me to come here,” Martha Thomas said after signing for Manchester United. “I want to be enjoying my football again and I’m looking forward to challenging myself in this environment and being part of an attacking team where I can express myself.”

“My focus right now is on settling in and putting in the hard work at training, but I can’t wait for the season to start and to see all the fans back in the stadium,” she added.

She has big boots to fill after Lauren James has been the spearhead of the attack for the past couple of years. She earned a move back to Women’s Super League champions Chelsea.

“It’s a great feeling to come back home, to a great club, the club I started at the age of six.” Lauren James said after completing her move to Chelsea. ”To be able to play for the first team now and come back here to Emma and the rest of the group is a good feeling. I’m excited to get started and I can’t wait to meet all the fans at Kingsmeadow when the new season kicks in.”
