US international footballer Megan Rapinoe has criticized the US Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion by calling it sad and cruel. The decision to remove constitutional protections for those seeking abortions was met with protests all around the country. The court overturned the ruling of Roe vs Wade which will most likely lead to bans on abortions in more than half of the US states.
“It’s hard to put into words how sad a day this is for me personally, for my teammates, for all of the people who are out there who this is going to affect,” US international footballer Megan Rapinoe said. “It will completely exacerbate so many of the existing inequalities that we have in our country. It doesn’t keep one single person safer, it doesn’t keep one single child safer, certainly, and it does not keep women safer.”
“We know that the lack of abortion does not stop people from having abortions, it stops people from having safe abortions,” she added. “I would encourage people to understand all of the different aspects that overturning Roe v Wade will have on everyone in the entire country. I just can’t understate how sad and how cruel this is.”
“Disgusted by the decision made by the Supreme Court in the US today. I don’t understand why some in power pushed and continue to push to strip rights away from millions of people,” Lewis Hamilton said. “This decision will impact the most vulnerable among us. Women, people of color, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and so on.”
“The NBA and WNBA believe that women should be able to make their own decisions concerning their health and future, and we believe that freedom should be protected,” the NBA said in a statement. “We will continue to advocate for gender and health equity, including ensuring our employees have access to reproductive health care, regardless of their location.”
