Barcelona has successfully agreed to a deal with Lyon forward, Memphis Depay to sign on a free transfer. Depay will see out his contract at Lyon that ends at the end of the month. He transferred from Manchester United in 2017. Ronald Koeman will once again reunite with the forward after coaching him with the Netherlands.
“FC Barcelona and Memphis Depay have reached an agreement for the player to join the club once his contract with Olympique Lyonnais is at an end. The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.” a club statement read.
Memphis Depay will become FC Barcelona’s third free signing of the summer. The club has already signed Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia from Manchester City. Georginio Wijnaldum, another target of Barcelona signed for PSG a week ago. He decided to work with Mauricio Pochettino who had previously tried to sign him for Tottenham. Barcelona has been hit hard with the pandemic incurring over £1billion-worth of debt.
“Everyone knows that I have been negotiating with Barcelona for some time.” Memphis Depay said while at the Euro 2020 with the Netherlands. “I want to play with Ronald Koeman. Now is the time to wait, but soon there will be news.”
