Luka Modric had never doubted Real Madrid’s trophy chances when Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus. Luka Modric maintains that Real Madrid still assumes they will get back to winning trophies after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018.
Shortly after winning his fourth Champions League with Los Blancos, the Portuguese star left Madrid for Turin in a deal of €112 million and enjoyed Serie A glory in Italy’s first season.
Madrid went on to win the 2018 Club World Cup but otherwise experienced a disappointing season with Barcelona taking the championship cup, Liverpool retaining the Champions League, and Valencia winning the Copa del Rey.
However, with Zinedine Zidane re-installed as head coach in March of last year, Los Blancos emerged triumphant during the interrupted 2019-20 season to once again win the league title.
Modric insists that there was never a doubt in terms of the team’s ambitions since Ronaldo left for Juve.
“It’s pointless to think about how important Ronaldo was to Us, but I have to say we weren’t burdened by the fact that he wasn’t there anymore in the sense that we couldn’t generate the same motivation. We were sure we would continue to win trophies even without him, because the team is still above all, irrespective of the power of the athlete,” he told Sportske Novosti.
