Gerard Pique helped Ronald Araujo for the next decade to be a cornerstone in the heart of the Barcelona backline, with the young center half now impressing in the absence of Pique.
Pique has not shone for Barcelona after suffering a knee ligament injury during Atletico Madrid’s November defeat, but Araujo has stepped up and filled the void left by the veteran from Spain.
The 21-year-old, who had made just six La Liga appearances before this season, was an assured defensive player, impressing with his reading of the game and ability to play from the back.
Pique told Barcelona’s official club website, “Araujo is a great center-back and will be for 10 or 15 years,” “He has it all. He’s very young and has a very good brain. He’s also smart, quick, and powerful physically, and has good control of the ball.
La Masia works well and he has matured with the youth team during his time in Segunda B, and now he has taken the chance with the first team. We need to motivate him to be the best possible player.
