Carlo Ancelotti believes the race to Europe will go down to the final day of the Premier League season. Everton has recently endured a slump of form and is winless in their last five matches. Everton plays Arsenal this weekend leading them by 3 points. They are six points behind Chelsea in fourth place. Everton has a game on hand over Chelsea.

“We’re still in contention and we’re going to be in contention until the last game,” the Everton boss said. “The race will not be decided before. There are a lot of teams involved and a lot of matches still to be played. We still have to play against West Ham and we still must play Aston Villa twice.”

Dominic Calvert Lewin has been a big miss for Everton and the lack of goals is a testament to that. The English striker was all smiled in training before the weekend game. Harry Kane scored two goals in the 2-2 draw last weekend. Carlo Ancelotti said the draw against Spurs was their ‘best home display of the Premier League season’.

“If I were to change my tactical approach, it doesn’t necessarily mean playing four at the back instead of five,” Ancelotti said. “I can say to you that our approach [to being more offensive] can still change while playing three at the back instead of four.”

Ancelotti will be boosted by the returns of Yerry Mina, Bernard and Fabian Delph as well. Ancelotti has used a back three and a back four during the season. Despite this, Ancelotti is aware of the ideal system.

“It’s an interesting question. I feel like defending with four players is the best option. Sometimes, we’ve defended with five because I didn’t have the possibility of doing any different.” Ancelotti said when asked about his defense. “I’m not frustrated about this as we’ve to manage the injuries and situation above all in this special season. We’ve had some long-term injuries like the one to Lucas Digne, who was out for two months, Allan was also out for two months, James (Rodriguez) and Richarlison have both been out.”
