Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid joined forces to launch a fundraiser to help the most vulnerable families hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Spanish capital.
“Madrid has once again taken the lead in solidarity, commitment, and determination. We are facing one of the most difficult situations in our recent history but we are going to get through it together. Together, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid launch Madrid (Madrid for Madrid), an initiative to the advantage of our society’s most needy men,” Real president Florentino Perez said in a video released by both clubs.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo added: “This initiative can unite all of Madrid to help those who are going through a rough period.”
Spain is one of Europe’s worst affected coronavirus countries with more than 27,000 deaths including 8,000 in Madrid.
Strict lockdown by the country to halt the virus spread has paralyzed its economy. A record of 5.2 million people registered for jobless benefits last month.
