Real Madrid defeated Mallorca 2-0 in La Liga’s 31st round and began the big battle for the title with Barcelona. The Blancos are playing their home games at Alfredo di Stefano ‘s replacement stadium as there’s a lot of work going on at the Santiago Bernabeu but that doesn’t affect their football quality.
Mallorca, with whom the Croatian striker Ante Budimir started from the first minute, began openly and threatened in the 9th and 11th minutes respectively, through Babe and Lago Junior, so the host had to be saved by the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
But in the 19th minute Real scored after Luka Modric nicely assisted the playful Vinicius Junior on the edge of the penalty zone.
The young Brazilian had gone out on Manola Reina alone and scored for the lead. The situation at the start of the action is problematic, however, as Dani Carvajal won the ball with a rough start, which then reached Modrić.
Five minutes later, after a nice pass from Karim Benzema, Vinicius tries to lob Reina but the ball ends up at the crossbar.
Danger from the other side in the 29th minute-Lago threw in from the left side, Budimir in the leap, just a few centimeters away from having a risk in the leap in front of Courtois. Captain Sergio Ramos confirms Real’s victory. He took a free-kick from 18 meters in the 56th minute and struck Manolo Reine ‘s right fork perfectly. It was amazing accuracy, the shot flew in a perfect trajectory over the wall, not even the visiting goalkeeper moved.
For Ramos, that was the tenth goal of this season’s 38th game. Brahim Diaz, who blocked Reina into a corner, threatened Real Madrid with a shot, until the end.
True welcomes Espanyol on Sunday, with Mallorca playing on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao. Barcelona is due to play in Vigo on Saturday, against Celta.
