Roma regained their winning ways this evening, advancing to the Europa League quarter-finals. Following their success this evening in Ukraine, the Giallorossi defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 on aggregate. Borja Mayoral’s two second-half goals secured a win for the Italian capital club.
The Spaniard is now the competition’s joint-top scorer, with 7 goals and 2 assists in ten games.
At full-time, manager Paulo Fonseca praised his team’s mentality over the two legs against his former club.
“We defended well today, and it was critical not to concede a goal in the first half-hour,” the Portuguese technician told Sky Sport.
“Roma has never won a game in this stadium. We continue to keep fighting and will do so until the bitter end. Real, the top four race in Italy is extremely close, but we still have this field to contend with.”
“We are the only ones that have advanced in Europe, and we plan to continue. We are conscious, however, that it will not be easy.”
He went on to say, “We need to try to be an adaptable team. Balance is important not only in football but in life as well. This is something I strive to instill in my players and collaborators.”
