Ronald Koeman aims to capitalize on the contract deadlock between Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool by signing the Midfielder for Barcelona.
Wijnaldum reached the final year of his deal with the Premier League champions and has yet to agree to an extension after several months of negotiations.
Liverpool is reluctant to sell the 29-year-old who made more Premier League appearances last season for Jürgen Klopp’s team than any other midfielder, but their stance could change if a player who is out of contract next summer comes up with a substantial offer.
There has been no offer received from Barcelona but the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which has close ties to Koeman, says the former Dutch manager wants to pair Wijnaldum in midfield with his international teammate Frenkie de Jong.
The interest in Wijnaldum from Barcelona may have implications on Klopp’s attempts to hire Thiago Alcântara from Bayern Munich.
Liverpool has a long-standing interest in Thiago, who should leave the European champions but will have to sell a midfielder before the 29-year-old finalizes a deal.
A Wijnaldum exit will clear the path for Thiago’s arrival.
