The thumping half-volley from Andre Ayew saw Swansea City take the lead in their semi-final play-off against 10-man Brentford in their Championship.

Swansea will take a 1-0 lead in the second leg at Griffin Park on Wednesday after Ayew lashed home eight minutes from the end to hand the hosts an advantage they’ll feel they deserve after controlling the second half.

Ayew raced to the home dugout to celebrate his season’s 18th goal, which only came 16 minutes after he saved a penalty.

During the first half, Brentford was the better team, as both Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma missed good chances to put them during charge.

Yet after the break, the hosts came into the game, with Brentford ‘s cause not improving when Rico Henry was dismissed on 65 minutes for a lunging challenge on Connor Roberts.

Swansea, who in the dying minutes of the regular season only sealed a top-six spot, continued their charge into promotional contention as Brentford endured a third consecutive loss.
