Despite interest from Chelsea and Inter Milan, Dries Mertens is reportedly ready to sign a new contract with Napoli.

The 33-year-old forward was expected to leave Serie A side at the end of the season on a free transfer.

However, according to Sky Sport Italia, Mertens and his club are in ‘total agreement’ over a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2022.

The Belgian is projected to earn €4million at the San Paolo in each of the next two seasons, as well as €2.5 m for the contract signing.

Mertens has 12 goals in 29 games this term and is just one away from being the all-time leading scorer for Napoli.

Since arriving in an £8 m move from PSV Eindhoven, Mertens has spent seven seasons at Napoli and has played 309 matches, scoring 121 times – making him the highest goal scorer of the club with Marek Hamsik.

Frank Lampard had been on the Belgian’s hot pursuit to add some much-needed experience and depth to his summer forward line.

It had been suggested previously that he would be keen on moving to Chelsea, who also wanted to sign the forward in January.

Mertens spent seven years at Napoli and scored 121 goals in 309 appearances. He and Marek Hamšik share the first spot in the club’s history as the top scorers. The new deal will offer him a €4 million salary per season, and a € 2.5 million bonus to extend loyalty to the club, Italian media reported.

This summer, Mertens’ contract expired and he was expected to leave Napoli, and he was interested in Chelsea, Inter and Roma.
