Bayern Munich is said to have been able to compete with Chelsea for the move of RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano as they search for a substitute for David Alaba.
Alaba looks set to leave Bayern for a move to Real Madrid, according to Marca, and Upamecano appears to be listed as one choice to fill the gap left by the foreign Austrian.
With Marca mentioning that Chelsea is also said to be chasing the young Frenchman, who has a release clause of about EUR 42 million, Upamecano has impressed with Leipzig and may have a range of suitors.
That could make him a bargain, with the 22-year-old undoubtedly currently one of Europe’s most exciting young players.
As a long-term replacement for veteran defender Thiago Silva, Chelsea could do with a top young center-back like that to come in, although improvements are also needed for unconvincing performers such as Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
If Bayern joined the race, it would be a blow for the Blues, as one can easily imagine Upamecano being tempted by a bid from the Allianz Arena.
Last season, Bayern won the Champions League and have traditionally been one of Europe’s best teams for most of the past decade, while Chelsea is going through a transitional phase.
Without a doubt, Alaba would be a big loss for Bayern and a fine signing for Real Madrid, who also have to make defense changes to replace aging stars such as Sergio Ramos and Marcelo, with Alaba being a very capable choice, both center-back, and left-back.
