After a disappointing start to the 2020/21 season, Mikel Arteta’s squad is in desperate need of recruits and the Gunners have already been linked with a multitude of talented players.
Julian Brandt of Borussia Dortmund, Emiliano Buendia of Norwich City, and Tariq Lamptey of Brighton are just some of the names that have been featured in recent days in the Arsenal gossip mills.
For the north London hand, possible moves for all three of the above-mentioned players make sense, as each man will seriously strengthen Arteta’s squad.
Nevertheless, one of the new names to be connected with a move to Arsenal in January makes absolutely no sense at all.
Ah, anyway, from the viewpoint of the North London club…
The player for whom we’re talking is none other than Diego Costa. Arsenal is contemplating a move for the striker, as reported by AS after Atletico Madrid told the Spaniard that in January he might leave the club.
The departure of Costa would mean that Atletico would find a winger in the winter transfer market and Diego Simeone’s side would consider having the hot-headed striker depart on a free transfer six months before his contract expires as a result of Arsenal not being a direct Champions League competitor.
A former Chelsea player who, at the age of 32, would have commanded a massive wage, signed up for a free one? It seems the Gunners are looking to add to their already fragmented squad another Willian-like player.
Arteta and the board haven’t learned their lessons.
Costa, priced at only £ 9 million on Transfermarkt, will simply be yet another example of Arsenal’s woeful recruiting, as the best days of the Spaniard are firmly behind him.
Given that over the past few years, the Atletico striker has also been plagued with several severe injuries, he’d probably be a worse free transfer than Willian – which is saying something.
Steer clear of Costa and transfer to Arsenal for the likes of Brandt and Buendia!
