After his £ 16 million obligations to buy clause was activated, RB Leipzig announced the signing of Manchester City defender Angelino on a four-and-a-half-year contract, reports Sam Lee.

The appearance of Angelino in the Leipzig match against Augsburg on Friday night triggered the purchase obligation in the original loan contract.

The loan for the 24-year-old will continue until the summer when the transfer window opens and new signings are allowed in Leipzig.

Last January, on an initial loan contract, Angelino transferred to Julian Nagelsmann’s side. In the summer, the loan was extended, with Leipzig obliged to buy him after a certain number of games had been played.

In any competition, the defender had to play in 12 matches, with five of those appearances coming in the second half of the season, to activate the clause.

On 22 January, the midpoint of the German season began, and since then, Angelino has played in Bundesliga matches against Mainz, Bayer Leverkusen, and Schalke, as well as in the German Cup match against VfL Bochum.

As head coach Nagelsmann said, “Angelino is an extremely good player who is very important to our game.”

From the beginning, Angel played an important role for us, and – although he has grown exceptionally well and rapidly already – there is a lot more in him.

“He wants to constantly re-research his fields of development and that is extremely impressive.”

For Leipzig, Angelino barely missed a minute, playing 95 percent of their minutes this season.

As Leipzig sits second in the Bundesliga, he has thrived in a wing-back role, contributing four goals and six assists this season.
