UEFA has revealed that the venue of the 2021 UEFA Super Cup Final will remain in Northern Ireland. There were reports that the final would be shifted to Istanbul due to restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The UEFA Super Cup Final in Northern Ireland will see the UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea take on the Europa League Winners Villareal. It will take place at Windsor Park in Belfast.

Istanbul earlier was set to play host to the UEFA Champions League Final. The Final was shifted to Portugal with a few days to spare owing to restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The Turkish sports minister’s comments recently suggested that Turkey could be compensated with the Super Cup final as well as the 2023 Champions League final.

“We have kept in close contact with our partners at UEFA on the matter and following these discussions we are delighted that they have confirmed that the game will stay in Belfast.” Irish FA CEO Patrick Nelson said.

The shifting of the Super Cup to Istanbul was a strong consideration. Although a final decision for the venue to remain the same was taken once the teams were finalized. If Manchester United had beaten Villareal, the high profile of the match would have ensured a change in venue. Chelsea beat Manchester City to win the Champions League 1-0. Villareal got the better of Manchester United in a marathon penalty shootout 11-10.
