Unai Emery, in his first job since being fired by Arsenal, succeeds Javier Calleja at Villarreal.

Unai Emery has been appointed the head coach for Villarreal. The former Arsenal boss, Paris Saint-Germain, and Seville have agreed on a three-year deal with the club, finishing fifth in LaLiga in 2019-20.

This is Emery’s first job since he was fired by the Gunners last November after a run of just one victory in nine games in all competitions.

In 2018 he replaced Arsene Wenger at Emirates Stadium but struggled to secure a return to the Champions League, losing last year’s Europa League final 4-1 to Chelsea.

Emery has replaced Javier Calleja who left Villarreal after leading them back to the Europa League at the end of the regular season.

“I’m not grudging, but I’m wounded,” El Transistor told him.

“It is Unai Emery ‘s turn now and I hope he can drive them as far as possible. I’m saddened by the way it happened. I’d handled things differently.”
