The Barcelona legend Xavi Hernández has stated that he is already getting ready to return to Camp Nou shortly, proposing the 2021 presidential election as the perfect time to make the switch.

Xavi, who is currently in charge of Qatari side Al-Sadd, had a strong link with Barcelona’s coaching job back in January but rejected the bid as he felt it was too early to move to Quique Setién in Barcelona instead of demanding 90min.

After Setién has arrived it hasn’t been smooth sailing though. Barcelona has fallen behind in the title race at La Liga and the pitch results have not always been convincing, thus threatening Setién’s job security. If Setién does leave Camp Nou, Xavi ‘s name could be at the top of the replacement list, and the former midfielder admitted that he was already preparing to return to the club during an interview with Casa Nostra, Casa Vostra.

He said: “Being a Barça coach is the biggest hope I have now and getting Barça back to winning ways. Not me but these players triumphed, and Barça. And as a result, my technical staff are doing a lot of planning for it and it makes us very excited. I’m a club man. I want to come back at the right moment to start a project from scratch. I’ve said it a lot of times but I want to make decisions about footballing in Barcelona. The stage will be set after the elections, of course. I’m not ruling out anything. In January, they came to me, we were talking. I told them the circumstances and timing were wrong, but I hope they’ll come back.”

Current club president Josep Maria Bartomeu is expected to walk away when his term expires in 2021 and a clear picture is yet to be given of who may succeed him. Former president Joan Laporta has already expressed interest in the job, as has businessman Victor Font.

Interestingly, Font had previously discussed his desire to work with Xavi at Camp Nou, saying (via Marca): “I’m in tune with Xavi regarding the project, and I love talking to him about football and I hope he can lead our football project.”
