After Real Madrid moved top of La Liga with a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday, Zinedine Zidane hit out at a constant talk about refereeing decisions. For a foul on Vinicius Junior, Sergio Ramos’ penalty put Madrid ahead of him before Adnan Januzaj ruled out an effort for offside. Moments later, after a VAR test for a potential handball, Karim Benzema doubled Madrid’s lead and Zidane ‘s men kept on amid late strike by Mikel Merino.

Zidane is tired of all the referee talk, saying his side deserved their victory as they moved above Barcelona thanks to their superior head-to-head record.

The head coach in Madrid told a news conference: “What bothers me is that we’re only talking about the referees, in the end, it seems we haven’t done anything on the field. But we’re not going to manipulate the debate, we’ve prevailed on the field and I think we deserve the win.”

Zidane added: “There are a penalty and Karim catches it with his foot for the goal I guess. These are referee’s things so as usual I don’t get involved, he’s doing his job and nothing else. I’ve got to accept this stuff and worry more about what we’ve done. What is the most important thing for us is a worthy victory.”

Madrid, who on Wednesday host Real Mallorca, has played three consecutive games since returning to action after the coronavirus-enforced break.

Zidane was satisfied to leave Anoeta with three points, with Madrid top of the table with eight La Liga games remaining.

“A win, three points at a challenging stadium, we had to play a complicated match until the end. We played well, creating opportunities but that doesn’t mean anything. We’ve seen how difficult the last 10-15 minutes have been. But the feeling I’m left with is the effort and the intensity and attitude we’ve had from the start,” he said

Based on a superior head-to-head record with Barcelona, Los Blancos lead La Liga, who boasts the same points but superior goal difference.
