Blackpool put an end to four successive defeats as they produced one of the goalless football results of the weekend in the Championship. Birmingham, which remains in 14th place and has now lost just one of its previous six games, had Tahith Chong as their closest player. In reality, the game was dull, and a point didn’t aid either team’s efforts to move up the table, so a draw was a reasonable result. Luke Garbutt, who was starting for Blackpool for the first time this season because Dominic Thompson was chosen at left-back, sent in a cross in the 20th minute that flew past Gary Madine and Shayne Lavery at the far post.
However, Birmingham took over the game from that point on and missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Marc Roberts’ close-range attempt from an Auston Trusty knock-down hit the crossbar. After being set up by Manchester United loanee Hannibal Mejbri, the visitors kept up their pace and came even closer in the 35th minute when Chong’s dink over Blackpool goalkeeper Chris Maxwell hit the post. Maxime Colin put Emmanuel Longelo’s pull-back into the back of the net for John Eustace’s team just before halftime, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Before the hour mark, Madine missed a good opportunity for Blackpool after Callum Connolly’s cross. Later on, the home team came dangerously close to being caught off guard on a break, but Connolly came back to make an important interception. After being forced to hobble off, Madine was replaced by CJ Hamilton in the 70th minute, adding to Blackpool manager Michael Appleton’s mounting list of ailments. Sonny Carey found himself in a good position inside the box in the 76th minute, but he pulled his shot wide of the goal.
