Marcus Rashford scored a goal and provided an assist to help Manchester United produce one of the comprehensive football results of the weekend in the Premier League. A sickness interrupted United’s pregame plans, leaving Raphael Varane, who had just returned from France’s World Cup duties, as their sole fit center-back. Erik ten Hag was forced to employ left-back Luke Shaw alongside him. Although Forest rarely put their improvised defense to the test, Rashford stole the show in United’s first Premier League match without Cristiano Ronaldo. He scored the game’s first goal off Christian Eriksen’s deft corner in the 19th minute and set up Anthony Martial for the game’s second shortly after.

Prior to halftime, Ryan Yates of Forest had a goal disallowed for offside by video assistant referee (VAR), but otherwise, United was in complete control and sealed the victory when Casemiro, who was outstanding, stole the ball high up the field and fed substitute Fred, who scored a decisive goal three minutes from time. The victory guarantees United a strong start to their Premier League campaign and closes the gap to Spurs as they pursue a top-four finish. Forest, however, stays in 19th place and is one point from safety.

When Tyrell Malacia and Aaron Wan-Bissaka found space on the sides early in the game, warning flags for Nottingham Forest were evident. Tyrell Malacia’s powerful shot was deflected onto the post by Wayne Hennessey. It was fortunate that the shot didn’t slither into the net rather than into the upright for the goalkeeper, filling in for the on-loan Dean Henderson against his own club, but United didn’t have to wait long to make the breakthrough.

Following a practised corner routine, Rashford scored a goal to make it five goals in his previous eight games for United, both before and after the World Cup, where he also scored three goals for England. Rashford then set up Martial for the second goal. The Welsh international beat Hennessey despite getting a touch to Martial’s low effort, but the goal capped a quick counter from the hosts that began with Casemiro winning a tackle close to his own byline.

As halftime drew near, it appeared like United had the game under control, but they were given a reprieve when Yates, who was unmarked, had a goal disallowed after a free kick because Wily Boly was deemed to have been in an offside position when the goal was scored. Although Forest made a somewhat better start to the second half, United continued to have better opportunities, with Hennessey save attempts from Antony, Martial, Rashford, and Casemiro.

Brennan Johnson’s backheeled flick got a parried save from De Gea at his near post, giving Forest its best chance to get a goal back, but United finished the game strong. As Forest attempted to launch a counterattack, Casemiro, who had been outstanding at both ends of the field throughout the game, displayed amazing alertness to intercept a pass. He then passed in Fred, whose superb finish struck the far corner to complete one of the convincing football results of the weekend.

“We held a clean sheet and didn’t allow any goals. Happy about that because it serves as the foundation for competition. Without a doubt, we could have scored more goals. We made some excellent attacks and moved around a lot. You must score more goals when facing the keeper one-on-one,” Erik ten Hag said. “Rashford wasn’t the only one, but I’m once again quite pleased with his performance. He is in a really nice pattern right now, and if he maintains this pattern and mentality, it will be advantageous for both him and us. We are constantly in the market, but it must satisfy both the financial and the requirements of the sport. We make every effort to enlist the players we require.”
