Sam Kerr scored to help Chelsea Women produce one of the most comprehensive football scores of the weekend in the Women’s Super League. Spurs made a strong start, but the Blues quickly gained control in front of 38,350 spectators. In Emma Hayes’ first game back in the dugout after her emergency hysterectomy last month, Erin Cuthbert doubled the advantage for the home team before Guro Reiten scored from the penalty spot just before halftime. With the goal, Kerr’s scoring streak against Spurs increased to six goals in five games, and Chelsea moved three points ahead of Arsenal in second place. The visitors got the first opportunity through Drew Spence, whose low cross from the right was easily denied by Ann-Katrin Berger. The visitors had control of the opening minutes.

Jessie Fleming fouled Spence, who was facing her former team for the first time, giving Spurs an early free kick, but Berger was there to stop Eveliina Summanen’s shot. The only goal was scored by Chelsea in just four minutes of the previous meeting between these teams at the Bridge. This time, it took Kerr 12 minutes to score, as he coolly fired into the bottom-right corner after avoiding a late challenge. When Kerr went for a loose ball a short time later in the area, Tinja-Riikka Korpela beat her to it but was able to stop Kerr’s subsequent low shot.

Reiten’s corner found Cuthbert wide open just outside the 18-yard box, and she brought the ball down with her chest before volleying it into the top-right corner to give Chelsea their second goal. When Lauren James was charged down in the area and the referee pointed to the spot, the hosts increased their lead to three. Reiten took the initiative and finished with assurance, sending Korpela the wrong way. Before Berger rushed off her line to pluck the ball out of the air and stop Ashleigh Neville from reducing the gap before halftime, Spence attempted to prevent her former team from keeping a clean sheet but missed the left post.
