Tottenham suffered their fourth loss in seven games as Aston Villa produced one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. To move back up to the fourth position, Spurs needed to win. However, they put on another lackluster first-half performance and went down for the tenth game in a row when Emiliano Buendia capitalized on a mistake by the returning Hugo Lloris. Aston Villa played tenacious defense, keeping Spurs at bay throughout, and increased their lead when Douglas Luiz, whose long-range effort had caused Lloris to err in conceding the opening goal, completed a smooth team goal from John McGinn’s ball.

Due to Dejan Kulusevski’s minor ankle injury, the Spurs were unable to muster much of a response. In the second half, they failed to even attempt a shot on goal, with Harry Kane playing a supporting role and Heung-Min Son once more showing a lack of precision. At the final whistle, the home crowd booed the Spurs in protest. The victory moves Villa to within two points of the top half, increasing the pressure on head coach Antonio Conte and allowing former Arsenal manager Unai Emery to continue his unbeaten streak against Spurs to four Premier League games.

Ollie Watkins threatened Villa with a straightforward ball over the top that allowed him to slip by the Spur’s defence and drag a shot wide, while his opposite number, Harry Kane, did not even touch the ball until the 20th minute. Son, however, was the one who most epitomized Spurs’ annoyances. The South Korean could be spotted removing his face mask during the game’s opening moments, but his recent carelessness persisted in and around the opponent’s box. He missed an opportunity to capitalize on a bad Villa clearing once due to a sloppy first touch, then later in the first quarter, he had the chance to set up Kane but passed too close to Robin Olsen.

Ivan Perisic pounced on a Clement Lenglet pass over the top and crossed for Harry Kane, whose downward header was cleared off the line by Ashley Young, giving Spurs their first real chance. Olsen was well shielded, though, as Villa deservedly took the lead only five minutes after the interval when Lloris mishandled a long-range effort from Douglas Luiz. Watkins was able to steal the ball and pass it back to Buendia, who finished it off. The second-half improvement that helped Conte’s team salvage a draw against Brentford in their previous game failed to materialize on this occasion as Perisic shot over with one of the rare Spurs attempts as Conte’s team battled in response.

The second goal Villa deserved came when Douglas Luiz masterfully controlled McGinn’s wonderfully timed pass and coolly finished past the helpless Lloris. Villa continued to appear the more dangerous of the two teams. Many home supporters left their seats before the final whistle as Emery’s team continued to frustrate the hosts and appeared the more likely side to score, which caused those who stayed in their seats to once again express their displeasure at one of the disappointing football scores of the weekend.

After scoring Aston Villa’s second goal and contributing significantly to the first goal, Douglas Luiz was voted player of the game. His long-range shot forced Hugo Lloris to make a mistake. Under Unai Emery, the Brazilian is enjoying having more attacking freedom. The most of any player during the game was his five shots on goal, and his goal came following assists in his previous two matches against Liverpool and Brighton. His passing was precise, as evidenced by the 92 percent completion rate of his passes, and he made significant defensive contributions as well with tackles and interceptions that kept Spurs at bay and made sure that there could only be one victor in the midfield duel.
