Koeman had been linked with Barca after Ernesto Valverde was sacked before the champions of LaLiga finally turned to Quique Setien in January.
“Everyone knows it’s my dream to coach Barcelona,” said Ronald Koeman, but the Netherlands remains based.
Former Barca defender Koeman previously announced his deal with the Netherlands containing a clause enabling him to leave for Camp Nou after Euro 2020, though the European Championship was moved back 12 months due to coronavirus.
Koeman, who was subjected to heart surgery in May, dealt with uncertainty about Barca and its future.
“I’ve had a phone call [from Barca] as I’ve explained several times, but I want to hold my word with the national team, I thought we ‘d have Euro 2020 this summer,” Koeman told Catalunya radio.
“I’m happy with how things are with the national team and that’s the most important thing for me at the moment. None of us knows what’s going to happen in the future. There is a clause in my contract that will allow me to leave work after the Euros for the national team but now is not the time to think about it. Everybody knows my dream is Coaching Barca. Perhaps I will do it in the future, but as always, it depends on your results and success as a coach you need a lot of experience to coach a team like Barca,” he added.
Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the 2019-20 season postponed in March, LaLiga champions Barca were two points ahead of the close rivals Real Madrid.
Koeman won four LaLiga titles at Camp Nou and the European Cup / Champions League during his time.
“Barca is not the same as [Pep] Guardiola today, but she’s still a great unit,” said Koeman.
Dutch international midfielder Frenkie de Jong joined Eredivisie champions Ajax with Barca at the start of the season.
De Jong had scored two goals before the suspension of the season and provided LaLiga with as many assists. De Jong is a player who can adapt to a new midfield role. Koeman believes De Jong’s best role is just in front of the back four-where [Sergio] plays Busquets.
