Leah Williamson hoping Sarina Wiegman is back against Spain

England Women captain Leah Williamson is hoping Sarina Wiegman can return to the dugout after she missed their last group game of Euro 2022 against Northern Ireland. England has been in sublime form in the tournament so far scoring 14 goals while conceding none. They face Spain in the quarter-finals who are without Alexia Putellas who underwent surgery on her knee.

“It’ll be a massive bonus for us. Sarina’s experience and character speak for themselves and she’s great at connecting with us,” Leah Williamson said about Sarina Wiegman. “It’s great to have her influence, but it hasn’t changed anything in terms of the information she provides, but naturally, having her around the team is a good thing as well. We’re sturdy enough to survive without her, as we showed the other day, but it’d be great to have her back. We have to see how it works out with Sarina and ideally, you’d want everyone available, but we’re lucky that we’re such a well-prepared team. Despite the frustration, it doesn’t derail us at all which is a massive ‘well done to the staff and everybody around the team to make sure it doesn’t.”

“They are missing two key players in (Jennifer) Hermoso and (Alexia) Putellas, but I still think they’re a very good team. They’re very tight on the ball, but we have also seen over the last few games that they have some vulnerabilities,” Wiegman said. “I do expect the game they have played all the time, they will probably have the ball a lot, I hope we will too. We played them before and they had a little more of the ball, but that’s OK in certain moments of the game. I think we’re pretty confident on the ball so I’m excited to see what it’s going to look like.
