Manchester City has completed the signing of Julian Alvarez from River Plate for a fee of £14m. The striker will remain at River Plate for the rest of the season after signing a five-and-a-half-year contract with the club. Alvarez has been tracked by a number of clubs and has five caps for Argentina. He has scored 36 goals and provided 25 assists in his 96 appearances for River Plate. City has been in the market for a striker after Sergio Aguero left the club at the end of last season. They were heavily linked with Harry Kane but failed to land the England captain in the summer transfer window. They are leading the table despite being without a striker this season.
“Julian is a player we have monitored for some time. He is capable of operating in a number of attacking roles, and we firmly believe he’s one of the best young attacking players in South America,” Manchester City Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said after the signing of Julian Alvarez. “I am so happy we have managed to bring him to Manchester City. I really believe we can provide him with the right conditions to fulfill his potential and become a top player.”
