Rashford scores a hat trick to defeat RB Leipzig in the Champions League

Marcus Rashford came out of the bench to score a clinical hat trick as Manchester United continued its recent momentum by taking out RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

England International Rashford came on just after the hour mark and scored three goals in 16 minutes, first running clear to calmly slot in, then shattering in a terrific second, then drilling home a third in the stop time.

Teenage forward Mason Greenwood scored his first goal in the competition, beating Paul Pogba’s defense-breaking pass before drilling an accurate, low finish in the far corner.

Greenwood made another thumping attempt right at Peter Gulasci, though Anthony Martial’s poked attempt was also kept out by the visiting goaltender.

But when Martial reached the box with three minutes to go, he turned the penalty to score his first goal of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘s side followed up their excellent victory at Paris St-Germain in their opening game by gaining another outstanding three points to extend their undefeated streak to four games.

United had said before the game that they were “bemused” by the government’s decision not to allow fans to visit Old Trafford despite making the stadium a socially-distanced venue for 23,500 supporters.

And with United playing their first Champions League game at home since losing to Barcelona in the quarter-finals in April 2019, it was a shame that the supporters missed out on their side’s best campaign result.

Solskjaer ‘s side was up against the current Bundesliga leaders and a team that reached the semi-finals last term but made the German side look ordinary with a brilliant, all-round effort.

United’s impressive display was illustrated by the fact that Leipzig won six games and won one of their seven games this season, conceding just three goals in the process.

Man of the moment, Rashford again made an impact, netting all three of his shots to the goal.

Honored with an MBE earlier this month and continuing his battle against the government over free meals for school kids off the pitch, Rashford showed off his prowess with his first treble in the European elite club competition.
