Striker Santi Mina scored twice as Celta Vigo demonstrated their talented attack by crushing Elche 3-1 on Friday in the Spanish League.
In seven rounds, Celta’s first win lifted them to ninth place. Elche was left in the relegation zone, second-to-last.
After receiving an exquisite pass from Nolito, who used a skillful touch to redirect a ball from Iago Aspas that left Mina with only the goalkeeper to beat, Mina opened the scoring in the 45th minute.
A minute later, Aspas and Nolito collaborated again to set up Brais Mendez and hand the hosts a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Celta goaltender Ruben Blanco’s mistake let Elche pull one back in the 50th.
Blanco pawed a ball that was coming back into play over the end-line to avoid giving Elche a corner kick. The ball went straight to Guido Carillo of Elche, who helped Emiliano Rogini score in the empty net.
When he volleyed in a cross by Augusto Solari, Mina put the result beyond doubt in the 69th.
“We usually rely on Iago Aspas, but tonight I was happy to get the goals,” said Mina, with two goals.
“Every time we play we are ambitious but we also know that we have to take things one game at a time.”
Elche didn’t win the whole year and they’re looking at relegation.
Midfielder Raul Guti said, “The situation is critical.”
