Former champions Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Greece in their opening 2022 World Cup qualifier on Thursday with the visitors earning some extent from a disputed penalty as coach Luis Enrique insisted his side deserved to possess been winners. Spain dominated the primary half in Granada with Juventus striker Alvaro Morata scoring with a left-foot drive on 33 minutes. At the interval, veteran defender and skipper Sergio Ramos was replaced by Inigo Martinez but the Athletic Bilbao player was guilty for the equalizer just before the hour mark.

It wasn’t an exciting game. The hosts had the upper hand, so it didn’t matter. The Spaniards fired four shots at the Greek goal in the first half, one of which was successful. Alvaro Morata scored the goal.

The Juventus striker capitalized on Koke’s pass to bring La Roja ahead. The hosts controlled the ball for up to 80% of the time. The Greeks traveled profoundly and, to use a colloquial term, “walled up” entry to their target. Morata’s goal seemed to be the breaking point, with Enrique’s players adding to the score in the second half.

Offensively, precision and imagination tended to lag. Enrique substituted Sergio Ramos at halftime with Inigo Martinez, who fouled Giorgos Masouras in the penalty area in the 56th minute.

Captain Anastasios Bakasetas took his place in the starting lineup and defeated Unai Simon with a confident kick. Spain had just two shots on goal in the whole game! It was a humiliation for La Roja.

What about the Greeks? – They gained a valuable point on the territory of the group’s favorite.
