Agent Gianluigi Buffon is of the view that the goalkeeper has not only what it takes to become a coach but also to manage Juventus. ‘He knows Football.’
Buffon retired from international football in 2018 and is set to turn 42 in September despite having just extended his contract with Juve. So far Gianluigi Donnarumma has taken over Italy’s No 1 veteran’s jersey, but Silvino Martina felt two others were still in with a shout.
“Donnarumma and Meret are going to be Italy’s future goalkeepers. I think right now, they are the two most promising lads in Italian football. In the meantime, Perin is a healthy pair of hands. The Italian goalkeeping school has always been among the best in the world. Some time ago I saw Meret for Udinese Primavera and I was impressed with how he kept goal.”
Buffon plans to play on until he is at least 43 years old, but his agent wants him to go into coaching at some point.
“They have to be a coach in my opinion. He knows soccer and knows about running every dressing room. Could he be taking responsibility for the Bianconeri? He could, for me. The distinction between him and other goalkeepers is that he makes it easier. It’s a natural gift which he has.”
