According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Arsenal defender, Ainsley Maitland-Niles wants to leave the club this summer because he feels manager Mikel Arteta does not trust him.
The 22-year-old is primarily a central midfielder but has been used for most of his career at the right-back since breaking into Gunner’s senior team.
Notwithstanding being a key player when Arteta became manager last December, Maitland-Niles has lately struggled for regular playing minutes.
The graduate of the Arsenal Academy played in each minute of the first six Premier League games of the Spaniard, but only appeared in four of the following 12, playing just 70 minutes in total.
As reported back in March, disciplinary problems and Maitland-Niles’ option to play in midfield contributed to his lack of recent minutes of action, and as a result, some people at Arsenal feel he might be done for at the club in North London.
The graduate from Hale End attracts interest from clubs in England and Germany and a summer departure looks almost inevitable from the look of things.
Arsenal will be able to cash in on him as they look forward to the summer transfer window and raise much-needed funds so that the exit of Maitland-Niles won’t leave Arteta heartbroken.
