As Donny van, de Beek continues to be linked to Manchester United and Real Madrid, Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar has insisted that the club won’t sell their star players on the cheap amid the coronavirus crisis.

After several years of mediocrity, Ajax finally re-emerged as a significant force on the biggest stage in 2018-19, with head coach Erik ten Hag boasting one of European football’s most exciting young squads.

Last season, the Amsterdam-based outfit captured a domestic double and managed to reach the Champions League semi-finals-only to be knocked out by Tottenham in crushing fashion.

Unfortunately, last summer, respectively, the award-winning duo Matthijs de Light and Frenkie de Jong left for Juventus and Barcelona, which naturally led to a decline in both domestic and European front results.

In the group stages this season, Ajax was knocked out of the Champions League and missed the semi-final stage of the KNVB Cup, thus struggling to retain her supremacy in the Eredivisie.

Ten Hag’s side were denied the title when the season was voided in April due to the Covid-19 pandemic despite being top on goal difference, and now look likely to lose more main stars when the transfer window reopened.

In February, Hakim Ziyech signed a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea and is set to join his new team-mates next month at Stamford Bridge, while United and Madrid are reportedly preparing to launch separate bids for Van de Beek.

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana and left-back Nicolas Tagliafico were also tipped to leave Ajax this summer, but Van der Sar says no further departures will be sanctioned unless Football director Marc Overmars gives the green light to the club.

The Ajax CEO told Dutch publication NoS: “We know players have the ambition to leave after a couple of years for better competition, but this will only happen under Marc Overmars and Ajax conditions.
