Less than a week after crushing Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final and exactly a week after defeating Real Madrid in its semi-final, thanks to a late winner, Athletic Bilbao went to the last 16 of the Copa del Rey.
Their opponents were third-tier UD Ibiza, but given the departures of both Madrid and Atletico Madrid to third-tier competition in the Copa this season, this was a tie nobody took for granted.
There was hope early on that Ibiza could join Cornella and Alcoyano in delivering an upset. They gave Athletic a pre-game honor guard, but showed little respect after the first whistle, taking the lead through Javi Perez in the 12th minute.
However, Iker Muniain and Raul Garcia both came on at half-time, and the latter was on hand in the 52nd minute before Unai Nunez dealt the killer blow in the 90th to score the Basques’ equalizer.
