Earlier, second-placed Augsburg missed the opportunity to top the table as they were holding a goalless draw at Wolfsburg, who was denied a first-half goal.

Having defeated Union Berlin and stunned Borussia Dortmund in their opening German league games, Augsburg’s third straight victory would have been topped by RB Leipzig, who reached the bottom side of Schalke 4-0 on Saturday.

With coach Heiko Herrlich missing out on the sidelines due to a lung problem, Augsburg’s attack struggled to reach the net at Wolfsburg, who had scored their opening three league games.

The hosts had a first-half goal by the centerman Josip Brekalo ruled out as the VAR spotted striker Wout Weghorst offside in the build-up.
