Borussia Dortmund strengthened their hold on second place and got closer to qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season with Emre Can securing a 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin, who lost for the very first time under Bruno Labbadia.

With both Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen losing, as well as RB Leipzig dropping points this weekend, Dortmund was able to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League next season with a win, but Hertha Berlin is no pushovers under Bruno Labbadia as we have seen since the Bundesliga’s restart.

And so it was that the Old Lady did their renewed reputation with three clean sheets in four games, more justice with a solid defensive display.

Thorgan Hazard sliced a shot wide right of the goal, with Julian Brandt screwing an effort past the very same post as Dortmund built a familiar amount of attacks, but without finding the time or space to bring any in the first 45 minutes to a successful close.

Dortmund found a key to unlock the Hertha defense for five minutes in the second half, but uncharacteristically Jadon Sancho upright placed his shot wide from Achraf Hakimi ‘s pass on the left hand.

It was, however, the moment that opened the game with Hertha realizing they shouldn’t focus on defending themselves, and Alexander Esswein duly sent his first dangerous shot just inches wide from the far post.

That, in turn, convinced Dortmund to go up the ante: Jadon Sancho’s cross was masterfully headed down for Can by Julian Brandt to provide a side-footed finish to a sublime move. Another dynamic move almost saw Sancho put the icing on the cake, but England International’s shot was blocked as the game started to end.
