Atletico Madrid will be rewarded for their win over Liverpool Champions League title holders by handing out the trophy if this season’s competition can not be concluded.

That’s the view of Atletico chairman Enrique Cerezo, who suggested the 2019-20 edition winners should be the team that knocked out the reigning champions.

His comments, probable tongue in cheek, come as UEFA formulates a plan to complete the competition, with Atletico advancing past the Reds to reach the quarter-finals.

One possible solution is to stage matches for the last eight at a single host city, with one-off fixtures likely to replace the traditional two-legged contests.

Yet Cerezo has his thoughts about how things could be resolved if the Champions League couldn’t be done.

“In the hypothetical case that the coronavirus did not play the Champions League, the champion [should] be the one who beat the champion. It still leaves a few knockout games, the quarter-finals, the semis and the final.”We understand that UEFA is trying to centralize all these matches in one city, Spain, Portugal has been talked about. Nothing is known yet. In addition to the final phase of the Champions League, there are 11 games left, which can be four games. I imagine the government is waiting to see how the pandemic is progressing and to make the decision it is considering,” Cerezo said to Mundo Deportivo.

In 2014 and 2016, Atletico lost two Champions League finals.

On Sunday, Diego Simeone’s side resumes their LaLiga campaign behind closed doors at Athletic Bilbao.

While no confirmation has been given when the European Cup could be concluded, reports suggest that it could be held throughout August.

Atleti is one of four sides to the quarter-finals, with Paris Saint-Germain, Atalanta, and RB Leipzig advancing to the final eight.
