Cruz Azul striker Jonathan Rodriguez tied for the league lead in goals with 13 in the Apertura season of Liga MX, which ended last month.

The 27-year-old is one of the Mexican league’s top goal scorers; his time with La Máquina, however, may be coming to an end.

The Mexican club may be looking to offload their star player after a video emerged on Twitter of the Uruguay international attending a party and breaching COVID-19 protocols.

Mexican media outlet TUDN claims that Cruz Azul is in negotiations with Rodriguez’s Chinese club, with a $6-million bid on the table. The article notes that the club is already starting its hunt for a substitute, scouring for a striker in Europe and South America.

Recently, Chinese clubs have started to dip their toes into the Latin American market.

Clubs in China are starting to take another path to develop their squads after years of paying big bucks for aging players in Europe. Colombian playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero left River Plate during the summer to join Shenzhen FC for a Marca transfer fee of EUR 8 million.

In Latin American football, Rodriguez may be the next major name to leave for the Asian continent.
