Ederson rejects the criticism aimed at Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford has faced criticism for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk, but Ederson’s sympathy is with the goalkeeper from Everton.

Pickford has come under pressure from many sources, but goalie Ederson of Manchester City has sympathy for the 26-year-old who was left out last time out by Carlo Ancelotti for the loss of the Toffees to Newcastle United.

Ederson said at the press conference on Sunday, speaking ahead of City’s crunch clash with Premier League champions Liverpool: “First and foremost, I don’t think any player steps on the pitch trying to hurt an opponent. Often you have a fraction of a second to make a decision.”

Unfortunately, the clash with Van Dijk had Jordan Pickford and it ended up resulting in a serious injury. That’s part of football; it happens occasionally.

It could happen to either of us. I don’t think Pickford intended to harm Van Dijk and, in the same way, I don’t think it was the intention of [Sadio] Mane to do that when he clashed with me a few times in our game.
