In the space of nine days, Eibar manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has been facing both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
On 20 December, the Basque side slipped to a 3-1 home loss against Los Blancos, but on Tuesday night they did better against Blaugrana as they held the hosts to a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.
With Madrid in shape, winning six games in a row across all competitions, Mendilibar has now compared what it was like to face each side, while Barcelona has fallen to sixth in the standings.
On Cadena Ser, Mendilibar clarified: “The difference between Barça and Madrid is that Madrid can play much faster than Barça. In the first 20 minutes, Madrid played us at a tempo we were not able to keep up with. It was the first time Eibar had prevented defeat at Camp Nou on Tuesday night, but they were decent value for a point against Lionel Messi-less Barcelona, with the Argentinean sitting in the stands because of a knee injury.”
With 16 points from their opening 16 league games, Eibar is currently 15th in the standings.
