Jordan Henderson led the player response against the proposed European Super League. The Liverpool skipper provided a joint statement. He even organized a meeting between all captains of the Premier League. Liverpool were one of the six premier league clubs to join the breakaway league. All six of the Premier League clubs have since withdrawn from the European Super League.
Seconds after the Liverpool skipper tweeted, his teammates Virgil Van Dijk, Andy Robertson, James Milner and others followed suit. The message was clear. A number of fans praised Jordan Henderson for his response to the formation of the European Super League.
“We don’t like it and we don’t want it to happen,” the message began.
“This is our collective position.
“Our commitment to this football club and its supporters is absolute and unconditional.
“You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Liverpool fans were at the heart of the protest after demanding flags to be removed from the Kop. Fans arrived at the stadium in droves to ensure their presence was felt. Banners were tied on all the railings around the stadium. The fans’ protest started at Stamford Bridge when not just Chelsea supporters gathered to protest the European Super League.
Earlier, the Liverpool owners did not even speak about being a part of the European Super League, leaving it to Joel Glazer to do so. “By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.” Glazer wrote.
All the backlash led to the Merseyside club pulling out of the European Super League late on Monday. “Liverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued.” the club tweeted. “In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions.”
