Fernando Santos has agreed on a new contract to remain as coach for Portugal until 2024.

The 65-year-old guided Portugal to success at the League of Nations at Euro 2016 and last year.

Santos, who was appointed to the role in 2014, has also secured the most victories from a coach in Portugal’s charge.

President Fernando Gomes told the Portuguese Football Federation’s official website: “This decision was very easy as we are renewing the contract of a coach who is a European champion.

The Portuguese football federation said Portugal coach Fernando Santos will remain in charge of the national team until the 2024 European Championship.

His deal had been scheduled to expire after Euro 2020, owing to the coronavirus pandemic, but was delayed until next year.

“This project is a privilege for me and my coaching staff to continue. We know we can’t win anything but we’re still going to try,” Santos said.

“This was a straightforward decision to make given that we are renewing a European Champion deal. He’s a winner,” said Fernando Gomes, president of the federation.

At next year’s European Championship, the 2022 World Cup, and Euro 2024, Santos is now expected to remain in charge of the National team.
