Borussia Dortmund has announced Thomas Meunier ‘s signature on a free transfer of former Paris Saint-Germain right-back.

Over the past 12 months, Belgium International has been linked to a Premier League move, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham all being listed as potential destinations. However, it was Bundesliga giants Dortmund who won the race for the 28-year-old, with Meunier agreeing on a four-year deal lasting until 2024.

Explaining his reasons for joining the club, Meunier alluded to the enthusiastic support of BVB, with the defender watching the famed Yellow Wall closely this season as PSG dumped the German side out of Europe.

The Belgian told the official website of the club: “Borussia Dortmund plays exactly the football I want to play: thrilling, authentic and genuine. BVB is known for its passionate supporters, and my decision was inspired by the atmosphere during the game with PSG at Signal Iduna Park.

“I’m ambitious and I’d like to win titles with Dortmund, as when I was in Bruges and Paris,” he said.

As Goal confirmed, Meunier had already agreed, along with his former PSG team-mate Edinson Cavani, not to make himself available for the remainder of the Ligue 1 champions league campaign.

Thomas Tuchel ‘s team is in the quarter-finals of the series, which will now be played as a mini-knockout tournament in Lisbon in August after the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have resulted in a change in format.

Nevertheless, both Meunier and Cavani would depart when their contracts end on June 30, dealing a blow to the French capital club’s hopes of winning the competition for the first time.

As for Dortmund, the sporting director Michael Zorc, who signed a new deal with the club until 2022, also announced that the next season’s head coach Lucien Favre will remain in his post.

He told reporters: “Internally, we have a lot of confidence and in due course, we will have talks [with Favre].”
