Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick says the star striker of the reigning German and European champions, Robert Lewandowski, deserves to win Thursday’s Best FIFA Men’s Player Award 2020.
In 2019/20, Lewandowksi was crucial to Bayern winning a treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and UEFA Champions League titles, finishing with a whopping 55 season goals. He was just the second player to win all three trophies in each competition while still scoring at the top, and he also lifted the DFL Supercup and UEFA Super Cup.
Together with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo, the Polish striker is on a three-man shortlist for the coveted FIFA trophy, which honors accomplishments between 20 July 2019 and 7 October 2020.
Bayern manager Flick, who was nominated for the distinction of Best FIFA Men’s Coach, says Lewandowski is the apparent contender to be formally recognized as the best player in the world in 2020.
“It’s a big goal for him and a big dream, and I think no one deserves it as much as Robert does this year, “It’s a big goal for him and a big dream, and I think no one deserves it as much as Robert does this year.
“I think the whole team, the whole club, and all the fans are crossing their fingers for him that [the dream comes true. We’ll all be happy if he gets the award on Thursday.”
Lewandowski has already been appointed UEFA Men’s Player of the Year and the 32-year-old was confirmed as the Golden Player at the Golden Boy Awards earlier this week – with Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund, also a major prize winner at that event.
