Harry Kane has passed 200 club goals in his career as Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United to lift their Europa League qualification hopes.
The victory – which brings Spurs up to seventh – was the first win for Jose Mourinho in his eighth attempt at a St James’ Park Premier League match.
The visitors led in the first half when Son Heung-min drilled a low shot into the bottom corner moments after the drink break disrupted Newcastle ‘s dominance.
Dwight Gayle almost leveled when his header struck the post and Matt Ritchie blasted an equalizer 11 minutes after the restart.
Yet the balance lasted just four minutes as Kane converted from a deep cross from the substitute assist Steven Bergwijn. That was the England captain’s 200th goal in 350 appearances, 184 for Tottenham and the other 16 for Millwall, Leyton Orient, and Leicester loan clubs
He got the late 201st with another header after a shot by Martin Dubravka parried by Erik Lamela.
Newcastle gave an impressive performance. They managed 22 shots from Spurs to eight, but their season is only petering out as there remains speculation about their Saudi Arabian takeover.
