Jermain Defoe thinks Harry Kane should abandon Tottenham if he wishes to win trophies.
Kane is under contract with Tottenham until June 2024, but the England captain has confirmed that he will decide on his future after Euro 2020. If the prolific 27-year-old striker is greedy for medals, Defoe claims he will have to abandon his boyhood club.
“If you’d asked me this question a few years back, I’d have said he should have stayed there, what he’s done at the football club – he’s a hero,” the Rangers and ex-Tottenham striker told Darren Bent’s Boot Room on talkSPORT.
“Since I left and went to Rangers, I’ve seen that attitude and played for another major club, the value of playing for that club and winning every game, that mentality, expectations, and demands.
You must win and carry silverware; otherwise, it is insufficient. Wow yeah, when you do that and the feeling you get from it. That is something I wish I had known earlier in my career. If Harry Kane wishes that and to win awards, he seems to have to quit.
I don’t think it would be easy for him to quit, because he might look at it and want to finish as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer to see where it takes him. He might win a few awards, but if he wants medals, he’ll have to go.”
Kane has been personally involved in 30 Premier League goals this season (17 goals, 13 assists). The England captain is the first player in the 2020-21 competition to hit the number, and it is the first time he has done so since 2017-18. (30 goals, two assists).
