To win titles and deliver Champions League football to Tottenham, Jose Mourinho was brought in.

The Special One struggled in his first season on both fronts and is in danger of going the same way in his second year in charge.

Although depending on the Europa League and their position in the Carabao Cup final as the remaining chances of silverware, Tottenham is out of the FA Cup, four points from the top four, and in poor shape.

But that is set against the backdrop of increasing dissent among Tottenham supporters fed up with the football style and the only consolation for Mourinho is that in White Hart Lane there are no fans permitted, otherwise it may have been toxic by now.

Especially after three straight Premier League defeats – their worst run of results in nine years – there are obvious doubts within the hierarchy and the pressure would have seemed intolerable had they not beaten West Brom on Sunday.

But a loss in the FA Cup at Everton has put the spotlight back on a manager going through a tumultuous season of highs and lows – but right now, the lows are certainly outweighing the highs.

There is so much of a trade-off with Mourinho. “At every club, he managed, Mourinho delivered trophies, but his pragmatic, safe first football is hardly in Tottenham’s best traditions, whose proud motto is “To Dare Is To Do.

If they are getting results, the fans can stomach the football. Founded on flair, glory, and style, this club.

A sideshow with Mourinho is also possible. Some senior players have reservations about the management of Mourinho though he has always been a hard man to get along with. Tottenham will appear to be no exception.

Surely Mourinho will get this season no matter what happens next, but it’s a major few weeks ahead, starting on Saturday with a trip to Manchester City, followed by crunch ties with Wolfsberg in the Europa League with a tricky game sandwiched in between at West Ham.
