Koeman speaks about potential January transfers

Ronald Koeman talked to the press ahead of tomorrow’s trip to San Mames in Barcelona to take on the Athletic Club. Recently, the Basque club named Marcelino as its coach.

Koeman was asked about Antoine Griezmann, who was signed in the summer of 2019 by Atletico Madrid for big money but has yet to consolidate his place in the Barcelona starting XI. He’s been left to stew on the substitutes’ bench lately.

“I like Griezmann, but I have to choose between the players I have with three midfielders while playing and Ousmane [Dembele] is physically improving,” Koeman said in Marca’s quotes.

Sergino Dest is a player who began the season well, but at the right-back, he started to result in rather erratic results. For Koeman, in light of his tender years and lack of experience, such inconsistency is to be expected.

“During a match, Dest has ups and downs,” he said.

He started solid, but he’s only 19 and requires time to adjust. He can make errors and change, like any footballer. I don’t feel disappointed because he’s young, and it’s natural.”

The Dutch coach was also asked about the transfer market in January, in which Barcelona was affiliated with several titles, including Eric Garcia and Memphis Depay.

Each coach always looks at January and how, just as I do, the squad can be strengthened,” Koeman said.

“I have made a list of potential injuries and players to bring in, which will be interesting. This depends on your club. If that’s not possible, I can rely on the players I already have.”
