Jack Harrison’s brilliant second-half shot consigned Newcastle United to a fifth straight Premier League defeat as Leeds won 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Throughout a sluggish first half, thanks to Raphinha’s outstanding 17-minute curling shot, Leeds was the better side and went on a score for the good at the break.
However, after the break, after a dynamic exchange between Jonjo Shelvey and Callum Wilson had teed up the Paraguayan for a one-on-one, Newcastle came out with even more focus and deservedly equalized by Miguel Almiron.
The Magpies continued to push forward even after the equalizer, asking serious questions of the Leeds defense, especially through Allan Saint-substitute Maximins in the second half.
But it was Leeds, with Harrison rounding a counter off the far post with a superb finish, who took it on the break.
The result moved Marcelo Bielsa’s side within an Arsenal point to 11th, while Newcastle stayed 16th.
