As he steps closer to a free transfer to Barcelona, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has officially declined the club’s current offer of a new deal.
The future of the Dutch international has been in doubt for some time now, and according to Todo Fichajes, this recent development seems to have cemented his intention to complete a move to Barcelona for the next season.
For Liverpool, Wijnaldum has been a hugely important player and could be a major loss for the Reds if he ends up leaving Anfield for the Nou Camp.
Still, Liverpool could also feel it’s not worth breaking the bank to hold him at the club for much longer with the player expected to turn 31 next season because he’ll certainly be past his peak soon.
However, Barcelona could well interpret this differently, as it is an opportunity to sign an established and experienced performer on a free basis.
After declining a new contract offer from Liverpool, Georginio Wijnaldum looks set for Barcelona.
The Catalan giants are currently run by Ronald Koeman, and from their time together with the Holland national team, the Dutch tactician may know Wijnaldum well.
It makes sense that Wijnaldum might now be viewed by Koeman as a core part of his Barca plans.
